The truth is that time, location, and financial freedom aren’t nearly as far away as we’re often led to believe. The whole idea slaving away at a 9 to 5 you hate until you’re too old to enjoy your life, all for a few days off each year and “benefits”, has never set well with me.
However, my journey to the laptop lifestyle wasn't all rainbows and butterflies, as it began with a divorce. I got married fairly young. Being young, naïve, and burnt out on school I happily dropped out of college to get married and work with him at his family’s business. So needless to say when things got toxic and I had to leave him, I not only had to leave our house and everything in it besides my clothes, I also left without knowing how I was going to make an actual living going forward.
I had no backup plan. There I was at 27 years old, starting completely over in life without anything except my car, clothes, and a laptop. I ended up moving 5 and a half hours away from home where I only knew one friend who let me crash on her couch when I got there. I picked up a job at a restaurant to suffice until I figured out what was next.
It was then that I made the decision that I was NEVER going to put myself in another situation where my financial stability and wellbeing were dependent on another individual. I was going to build something for MYself, that I could call my own.
